In Memoriam

October 13, 1938, to January 14, 2026

The Partners and staff of DunnCox mourn with profound sorrow and a deep sense of personal loss the passing of Christopher David Rhys Bovell, C.D a towering figure in the legal profession and a man of exceptional character, whose life and career left an enduring imprint on the firm, Jamaica, and the wider legal community.

Chris was universally admired for his unwavering enthusiasm for the law, his remarkable depth and breadth of legal and technical expertise, and the genuine fulfilment he derived from his vocation as an attorney. A pre-eminent commercial lawyer, he built an extraordinary legacy in corporate, banking, and mining law. His vision, gravitas, and rare ability to inspire trust brought distinction, opportunity, and sustained growth to the firm and to those with whom he worked.

Chris was beloved for many reasons, but most enduringly because he was genuine. Compassionate and inspirational, he possessed a rare depth of care for people and an effortless ability to connect with all he encountered. Whether in the company of national leaders or in quiet conversation with those of modest means, he extended the same grace, respect, and thoughtful attentiveness. Status never softened his humility; authority never eclipsed his kindness.

Educated Munro College and later at Cambridge University, Chris was called to the Bars of Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, and the Middle Temple in London. He commenced practice as a Barrister-at-Law in 1962 and was enrolled as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Jamaica in 1964.

That same year, he joined Dunn, Cox & Orrett (now DunnCox), becoming a Partner just one year later. Over the course of his distinguished career, he represented major mining interests, government institutions, and leading corporations, earning consistent recognition from Chambers Global and IFLR1000, including distinction as a top-ranked Senior Statesperson in General Business Law.

Within DunnCox, Chris embodied a rare and powerful form of leadership. He was humble, personable, and principled. He was a mentor in the truest sense, generous with his time, wisdom, and encouragement. He led quietly, firmly, and with unwavering integrity, shaping not only the firm’s professional standards but its culture and soul. To generations of partners, associates, and staff members, he was a steady guide, a trusted confidant, and a source of reassurance.

Chris’s commitment to service was exemplary. He was a longstanding member of the Jamaican Bar Association, a Notary Public, and served as Chairman of the General Legal Council’s Disciplinary Committee, where his integrity, wisdom, and principled leadership were widely respected.

His record of public service extended well beyond the legal profession. He served as a Government Senator from 1983 to 1989, was a Trustee of the Jamaica Labour Party, and held the office of Treasurer from 1993 onward. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to public life, the Government of Jamaica awarded him the Order of Distinction (Commander Class).

Chris’s devotion to the Church was equally profound. He served for over 25 years as Secretary of the Incorporated Lay Body of the Church in Jamaica and the Province of the West Indies, in addition to countless acts of faithful and often quiet service.

He was a devoted husband to Michelle Bovell and a loving father to Don, Denise, Terry-Ann, Susan, Paula, and Peter. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and his devotion to them was constant and unwavering.

Former Prime Minister Edward Seaga once remarked of him, “He is one man with whom you can safely leave your wallet.” This observation aptly captured Chris’s integrity, humanity, and the profound trust he inspired in all who knew him.

Chris’s passing leaves a deep and lasting void. He will be profoundly missed by his family, colleagues, and the many lives he touched. His legacy endures in the profession he elevated, the Firm he helped to shape, and the countless individuals he inspired through his ethics, kindness, and humanity.

Chris D. R. Bovell, C.D, was truly remarkable and will be remembered with enduring respect and gratitude.

As we honour his legacy, a condolence book has been made available for those who wish to write brief tributes.

Persons are invited to sign the condolence book at the Firm’s office between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
