Chris Bovell’s practice covers all aspects of banking, corporate and commercial law with a specialist practice in mining law. He has represented major mining interests in Jamaica, Governmental institutions and many large Jamaican corporations in relation to their commercial affairs. He has also in the last few years been acting in several Public Private Partnership transactions representing the Government Agency responsible for PPP’s.
The breadth of his expertise and experience has qualified him to serve on the Boards of Directors of several major companies including GraceKennedy Limited and CIBC First Caribbean International Bank (Jamaica) Limited. He has also been repeatedly listed as one of the leading lawyers in Jamaica in this area of practice by Chambers and Partners Global.
Chris is a former member of the Jamaican Senate (1983-89) and served for several years as the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council. He is widely known for his experience in Corporate Governance and has given presentations locally and at the Caribbean Commercial Law Workshop. He is also Chairman of Barnett Limited, a director of Hardware & Lumber Limited, and a former Chairman of the Corporate Governance Committee of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica.
Chris is currently a consultant in the firm’s Corporate and Commercial Department and a Notary Public.

Recent Experience
- 2016 – Member of a team which acted in the takeover of a company listed on the Jamaica Stock Exchange. DunnCox acted as legal counsel to an international beverage company during the Take Over Bid process.
- 2015-16 – member of a team which acted for the divestment of a Govt. owned petroleum stations and gas company to a private company.
- 2015 – Member of DunnCox team that represented purchaser of large independent energy producer which supplies energy to the national grid. Conducted due diligence on Jamaican operations and assisted U.S. Counsel with drafting of Sale and Purchase Agreements.
- 2015 – Member of team acting for purchaser of shares of majority shareholder of an airport operator. Conducting Jamaica due diligence on existing documentation and regulations governing operation and development of the airport pursuant to a concession agreement. Assisted overseas legal adviser to purchaser in the contract and transaction generally.
- 2015 – Member of team that acted on behalf of a multilateral institution. The international multilateral institution was the main financier of the project to construct a wind energy generation plant in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica.
- 2015-16 – One of the attorneys at DunnCox that acted as Jamaican legal advisors to a government entity throughout a privatisation of the Kingston Container Terminal, including the bid stage, evaluation stage, negotiations and finalising of the transaction documents. Along with international counsel, we drafted or reviewed various documents, including the Request for Proposals, Information Memorandum, Concession Agreement and Leases.
- 2014-2015 – One of the members of team representing syndicate of multilateral lending agencies in providing financing for renewable energy project (wind). Worked with New York counsel in preparing legal documents for lenders and giving legal opinion on Jamaican law to the lenders.
- 2014 – Member of team that acted as Jamaican counsel to an international bank in a new issuance of notes based on the 2006 Diversified Payment Rights Programme between the International Financial Institution and a local commercial bank. DunnCox reviewed the transaction documents for compliance with local laws and provided a legal opinion on the security documents. DunnCox also acted in the original 2006 transaction which was the first in Jamaica.
- 2012-2013 – Member of a team that acted for an international spirits company in the takeover of a listed Jamaican group of companies.
